PRP for Hair Restoration

PRP for Hair Restoration

Platelet Rich Plasma injections (PRP) injections are an emerging modality for promoting new hair growth and increasing hair thickness in male and female patients with hair loss.

Benefits of PRP for Hair Loss

  • PRP therapy is nonsurgical, with no downtime or significant safety risks. The entire procedure takes only about 30 minutes.
  • A 2019 review of studies finds that overall, both men and women have positive results in terms of increased hair thickness and regrowth.
  • This treatment costs significantly less than hair transplant surgery, because it’s a non-surgical treatment, and is not guaranteed to grow new hair, unlike hair transplant surgery.

What are PRP injections and how do they work?

PRP or platelet rich plasma injections are an in office procedure that leverages growth factors released from platelets in your own blood to stimulate hair follicle activity and promote new hair growth. A small vial of blood is taken from a vein in your arm and processed to increase the concentration of platelets in a fraction of plasma. This platelet rich plasma is then injected into the scalp in areas of hair thinning.

Is there any downtime or side effects associated with PRP injections for hair loss or thinning?

There is generally minimal downtime associated with PRP injections. Some potential side effects include bruising, soreness, headache or temporary swelling of scalp and forehead.

Can PRP treatments be combined with other treatments for hair thinning and hair loss?

PRP injections are often combined with other treatments for hair thinning and loss including hair growth supplements, topical OTC treatments such as Rogaine and/or oral prescription medications to promote hair regrowth.

How many treatments are recommended?

While the number of treatments may vary depending on individual factors, an initial series of treatments is usually recommended at monthly intervals for 4 months followed by maintenance injections every six to twelve months. Patients usually notice results within two to three months.

Are there any pre or post treatment precautions?

You should not take aspirin, Aleve, Advil, Motrin or any prescription anti-inflammatory medication for one week prior to treatment since these medications reduce inflammation which may lessen your results. Cigarette smoking at any time will also diminish results. Following treatment you should not apply keratin hair fibers to your scalp or color or cut your hair for 3-7 days.

Are there any contraindications to PRP scalp injections?

PRP is not recommended for advanced hair loss or hair loss associated with scarring. You should also not have PRP injections if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a platelet or blood disorder or are taking immunosuppressive medications such as corticosteroids, or biologic medications.
